TOTAL AREA 200 Acres, 319 rental units, 500 single-family homes
For decades, the Larimer neighborhood has been in decline. Dramatic population loss, crime, and disinvestment resulted in vacancy or abandonment of 60% of the properties. In response, The Housing Authority City of Pittsburgh, the Urban Redevelopment Authority and developer McCormack Baron Salazar, have led a design team to work hand-in-hand with community groups to redevelop Larimer. The plan includes new housing, new and renovated parks, and new retail and commercial opportunities. HUD awarded the project a $30 million Choice Initiative Implementation grant in 2013.
Since 2013, LBA Landscape Architecture has been an integral member of the design team to complete each phase of redevelopment. LBA’s responsibilities include site planning, municipal approvals, zoning approvals, mass grading design, public infrastructure design, landscape design, and community engagement. Each phase of redevelopment has overcome crumbling public infrastructure and difficult topography. These challenges have created a stronger, more vibrant Larimer neighborhood and fostered a deep sense of community pride.
