UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH CENTRAL CAMPUS
LOCATION Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
PROJECT TYPE Campus Planning, Design, and Implementation
CLIENT University of Pittsburgh
PROJECT BUDGET $15 Million
The University of Pittsburgh’s assessment of the failing roof deck of a below-grade parking garage at the interior of the Schenley Quad residence complex led the University to view the extensive repairs as an opportunity to reinvent the interior courtyard space, previously a parking lot, as a new outdoor public space for students. LBA led the design process, envisioning the space as the new hub of outdoor student life for relaxation, studying, informal gatherings, and small events. LBA paid particular attention to pedestrian and vehicular circulation, safety, accessibility, diverse seating arrangements, events, and lighting in the design. The collaborative process incorporated the ideas of numerous stakeholders across the campus community to enhance student life and promote social engagement.
